About Scion FR-S
The Scion FR-S was the U.S. model for the trio of Toyota GT 86 – Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S. It was a badge engineering for the same car built in a Toyota-Subaru joint venture.
The sporty, 2-door coupe with front engine and rear-wheel-drive was designed as an affordable car for the younger generation. It was offered with a six-speed manual as standard or a 6-speed automatic as an option. The Subaru's boxer-four engine was fed via a Lexus injection system. The front-engine placed as back as possible and the gearbox helped the car to achieve a 53:47 weight balance.
The outside look was just like the one on the Toyota GT 86 with slight variations of design and different badges. The Scion brand didn't last too much time on the market and the FR-S might be considered as the swan-song of the budget Toyota. It was the cheapest of the three vehicles. The base model was in the mid USD 20.000.
Inside, there was room for two adults. The dashboard was inspired by the Toyota GT2000 and the roof-line might be from the same vehicle. The bolstered seats were good for those who enjoyed curves more than straight lines. However, it's done in plastic. It featured a decent infotainment system on the higher-spec model, Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, push-button start, electric windows and mirrors as well as paddle shifters for the automatic model.
To help bring the rear-wheel-drive design to life, Scion FR-S featured a Torsen limited-slip differential.
